Central Texas bake-off, food show Saturday

A lot is happening on Oct. 8 in Milam County. The first Central Texas Bake-Off and Food Show will be held in Cameron at Yoe High School. Remember to submit your entry on-line at www.CenTexFoodShow.com or to the Milam County Extension Office at 100 E. 1st Street by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7. If you are just coming to the Food Show, you can buy a ticket at the door.

Here is a schedule for Saturday, Oct. 8:

8:30 to 9:30 a.m.—Bake- off check- in for pies, cakes and cobblers. Brookshire Brothers will be providing over $2,000 in total prizes for the bake-off winners and free gift bags for the food show.

1-1:30 p.m.— Food Show Event Awards Presentation and Auction of Top Winners hosted by Ann Harder, KXXV-TV.

1:30-2:15 p.m.—Patricia Sharpe, Texas Monthly Executive Editor and Food Writer presentation.

2: 15- 3: 30 p. m.— Casserole Queens cooking demonstration. Casserole Queens have been on the Food Network and the Today Show and now they are coming to Cameron. If you want to learn more about the Casserole Queens go to their website, www.casserolequeens.com/press.

The bake show is open to youth and adults. Youth age 5 and up along with adults and commercial cooks can enter up to three entries (one pie, one cake, and/or one cobbler). Participation is not limited to Milam County residents.

If you enter one, two or three items in the bake-off, you get one free ticket to the afternoon food show. So for as little as a $5 entry, you get a $10 Food Show ticket free. During the food show, awards will be presented for the top cooks along with an auction of the top food entries.

Two thousand dollars in gift certificates and awards will be presented by Brookshire Brothers for the top three participants in pies, cakes and cobblers in all age division.

FAIR HOME ECONOMICS CON TESTS— Rockdale Fair Home Economics Department is set for Oct. 20-22 in the New Salem Building at the Rockdale Fair grounds. Youth and adults from five years of age and up can enter crafts, photos, painting, food and much more.

The New Salem Extension Educ at ion A ssociat ion Club members will award cash prizes to youth grand and reserve champion winners. Beginner, junior, intermediate, and senior grand champion winners will receive $15 each and reserve champion winners will receive $10 each.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
