18-year term for sex assault of five-year-old
CAMERON—A 25-year-old Fairfield man received an 18-year prison term last week from 20th District Judge John Youngblood after making an open plea to the court on a lesser charge of sexual assault of a child. Full Story

Former dentist gets probation
A former Rockdale dentist has pleaded guilty to tax evasion in federal district court and received a five-year probated sentence.
Dr. John R. Rinn entered the plea last month in Western District Court, Austin.
Dr. Rinn was arrested at his Rockdale home last October after he was indicted by a federal grand jury on three counts of income tax evasion. Full Story

CrimeStoppers haunted house Oct. 28-29th
Milam County CrimeStoppers annual Warehouse of Horrors will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29 in downtown Cameron.
Doors open at 7 p. m. each evening in the former warehouse, located near the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks at 301 East First Street.
Doors open at 7 p. m. both nights.

Police term phone calls ‘a scam’
Rockdale police want citizens to know that nobody from law enforcement is calling them and asking them to pay fines or reveal personal information.
“That’s the latest scam here,” Lt. J. D. Newlin of the Rockdale Police Department said.
Newlin said police have investigated two incidents involving the phone scam over the past week. Full Story

County gets El Camino Real news
Milam County commissioners got an update on the El Camino Real National Historic Trail from a couple of Rockdale historians during a regular session Tuesday morning.
Dr. Lucille Estell and Joy Graham said signs are being planned at six places in Milam County along the trail, making Milam second only to Bexar (San Antonio) for designated places. Full Story
Garage fire call for RVFD volunteers
The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department was called out at 8:51 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, to a garage fire on Elm Creek Estates off FM 908 north of Rockdale.
It was one of three calls during the week for Rockdale volunteers.
The RV FD responded to a smoke scare at 9:34 a.m. Monday in the 1900 block of Highland, involving smoke in a bedroom. Full Story

The Rockdale Municipal District Development Board (MDD) will host a seminar/ work shop on Economic Development in Rural Texas Cities at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Patterson Civic Center.
Guest speaker is Joyce Bise, director of Giddings Economic Development Corporation.
