Police term phone calls ‘a scam’

Rockdale police want citizens to know that nobody from law enforcement is calling them and asking them to pay fines or reveal personal information.

“That’s the latest scam here,” Lt. J. D. Newlin of the Rockdale Police Department said.

Newlin said police have investigated two incidents involving the phone scam over the past week.

“In each case the caller is a male with heavy accent,” Newlin said. “He says he is from some law enforcement group and that you owe money.”

“If that doesn’t work, he tries to get personal information, Social Security or bank account numbers, things like that,” Newlin said.

In one case the caller was successful in obtaining a Social Security number, according to police.

“Don’t give him any numbers and, above all, don’t arrange to send any money,” Newlin said. “Real law enforcement agencies simply don’t work like that. You will be given plenty of documentation if there’s actually some kind of charge involved.”
