VFW lists winners in cookoff, run
Saturday was a day of fun and fellowship at VFW Post 6525 with the first-ever MAP Motorcycle Run and the post’s fall chili cookoff.
The run, benefitting the Military Assistance Program, raised $4,600 for military families and drew 55 bikers plus 10 riders, according to Rod Roderick, event chair. Full Story
Seven draw terms in 20th District Court
CAMERON—Seven persons were sentenced last week in 20th District Court, according to Prosecutor Kerry Spears who listed case dispositions as follows:

Smithville school bus hits cow
The trip home from Rockdale was little more adventurous than one bus full of Smithville students had planned Friday night.
A Smithville ISD bus collided with a cow at 11:15 p.m. on US 77, just south of Rockdale, according to Trooper Erik Gaston. Full Story
Amendments early voting starts Monday
Early voting for the Nov. 8 Texas Constitutional Amendment Election gets under way Monday at four locations around the county, according to Sherry Mueck, elections clerk.
On Nov. 8 voting will be consolidated into four polling places, two each in Rockdale and Cameron, she said.

Former Rockdale resident became renowned Hill Country landscapist
Accomplished Hill Country landscape ar tist and former Rockdale resident Pauline Thweatt, who painted under the name of C.P. Montague, died last year. Since about 1970, she had lived in a country home/studio near Jonah which she and her husband Bill Thweatt built with their own hands. Full Story
Q: What is a gustnado?
A: A “gustnado,” which is actually a slang term, is a short lived, low-level rotating cloud that can form as a result of the outflow, or gust front, from a severe thunderstorm, said Dion DeLao of Texas A&M University. The term is a blend of the words “gust front tornado” and they usually last just a few seconds to a minute or so. Full Story
