Thorndale Jamboree coming up Monday

THORNDALE—VFW Post 4009 and the VFW Auxiliary will sponsor the monthly Thorndale Country & Gospel Music Jamboree on Monday, Oct. 24 at the post home on N. FM 486.

The Jamboree is every fourth Monday except in December. The music with guest enter tainers and the house band will begin at 7 p.m.

“This month we will be collecting non-perishable food items to be given away during the holiday season,” said Marjorie Menzel, publicist. “Please bring canned goods or non-perishable food items to help with our food drive,” she said.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. “We will have sausage wraps, chicken salad sandwiches, homemade pies, desserts and drinks available,” Menzel said. “Please come early and enjoy the good food.”

Reading club meets at Caffey residence

Thursday Reading Club members held their second meeting of the 2011-12 year at the home of Dana Caffey.

Sixteen members enjoyed refreshments and a program by Johnnielyn Brown who reviewed and read excerpts from Daniyal Mueenuddin’s book, In Other Rooms, Other Wonders. This year’s course of study is “Favorite Books from Around the World”.

Donna Mitchell, club president, led the business meeting. Next meeting will be Nov. 10 at the home of Lois Fry with the program to be given by Dr. Lucile Estell.— Geri Burnett, reporter

Milam Retired Teachers to meet here on Nov. 9

Milam County Retired Teachers Association’s next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Peace Lutheran Church fellowship hall in Rockdale and will be a Thanksgiving covered dish luncheon.

Members are also asked to bring books for children which will be donated.— Bram Younts, co- secretary.

Donate used books for sale at city library

It’s time to clean up, clean out and donate used books to a worthy cause and de-clutter those shelves and your bedside table.

Friends of the Library wants your books for their upcoming Used Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 in the city library and outside on the library sidewalks.

Used and readable books (paperback and hard cover) can be dropped off during library hours—Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Helpers for sale day are also needed. Contact Ann King (446-3773) or Annette Stone (446-3963).

Friends of the Library provide funds for Children’s Summer Reading, sponsor authors in the library during the Tejas Festival, and support other literary programs in the community.

“Your used books will help continue their efforts to encourage learning,” Stone said.

Manor Oaks to host Halloween carnival

Manor Oaks Nursing & Rehab Center will host their annual Halloween Carnival on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 6 until 8 p.m.

There will be a costume contest, cake walk, caramel apples, ring toss, face painting, duck pond, foam dart gun and prizes.

“Everyone is invited and we are hoping for a great turnout from the community,” said Missy Morse, director of community relations.

Genealogy society to meet here Tuesday

Milam County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the community room at the rear entrance to Citizens National Bank in Rockdale.

Randy Billingsley is in charge of the program. Members whose surnames begin with Q through Z are responsible for refreshments. Drinks, ice and paper goods will be provided. Visitors are welcome.—Linda Whorton, publicity

Milano Lions holding annual fall fund-raiser

MILANO— Milano Evening Lions Club is holding its 2011 fund-raiser now through Oct. 28. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. Prizes are Walmart gift cards of $350, $250 and $ 50. Drawing will be Friday, Oct. 28 at the Milano High School football game. Buy tickets from any Lions member.

Grief support meetings held twice monthly

CAMERON—Standards Hospice is holding Grief Support Group meetings at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays, Oct. 27, Nov. 10 and 24 and Dec. 8 and 22.

“The meetings will continue into 2012,” according to Greg Nichols, chaplain. Meeting location is 115 N. Central in Cameron.

Sunshine quilters to meet October 27

Sunshine ‘n Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27 in the fellowship hall of Meadowbrook Baptist Church, according to Eddie Davidson, spokesperson.
