Rock on in...


Reporter/Mike Brown Reporter/Mike Brown Construction on the first of four planned “gateway monument” signs for Rockdale should be under way within a month after a ground breaking ceremony was held Saturday morning at the intersection of FM 908 and US 77 at the airport.

Bobby Pelzel, who is heading up the project for the Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD), said two signs will be erected on US 77 and two more at each entrance to town on US 79 (Cameron Avenue).

Saturday’s ground breaking brought out MDD and city council members along with interested persons from the business community.

The signs (artists conception above) were designed by Gary Griesbach, MDD president and son, Kurt Griesbach, with some input from the MDD board. “ The design uses rocks and follows through on the ‘rock’ and Rockdale theme,” Pelzel said.

Pelzel said the MDD has money budgeted for the projects “but we won’t really know how much they will cost until we’ve completed the first one.”

He said contributions to the monuments project may be made at City Hall. “See City Secretary Terry Blanchard and designate donations to the Rockdale Gateway Monument fund/account.

“The Municipal Development Board would like to thank those that have supported our efforts in making the first Rockdale Gateway Monument possible,” Pelzel said.

“ Those who made contributions of money, materials, design, engineering, labor and planning are greatly appreciated,” he said,
