Excitement runs rampant as Lady Tigers shoot for success

Super sophomore class should boost promising season

Victoria Drake Victoria Drake Entering her fifth season as head coach, Liz Galloway- McQuitter can hardly contain her excitement level as the 2011 season gets underway.

“ The girls have worked hard over the summer and in the off season and it shows,” she said. “It was very difficult to make two teams. I have a very good sophomore class that made it hard to keep them off varsity.

Two out of that class will join six seniors one junior and one freshman on the varsity.

McQuitter returns three veteran starts in Victoria Drake, Jill Young and Visha Henderson.

The 5-foot-8 Drake is the leading returning scorer after averaging 6.3 points last season.

Young is the top rebounder back after pulling down 3.1 boards last year.

Other veterans include seniors Amanda Coumont, Arlene Ramos, Ginny Flores and Keyanna Russell.

Coumont was injured and missed most of last season, playing in just eight games.

Jill Young Jill Young Those sophomores that will be counted on heavily are Taylor Pickett and Shelby Evans.

McQuitter is also excited about a freshman that could make an immediate impact in 5-foot- 6 Velma Mitchell.

“She will be an impact player,” McQuitter says.

The mix of veterans and newcomers is what has McQuitter optimistic about the season at hand.

“ This makes for a recipe of competitive players who push each other in practice. If we play defense and rebound, we will see more offensive output than any other team I have had here. The defense is key to running our break and getting fast break points.

“The girls are looking to make some noise.”

Opener

Mitchell lived up to her early reviews and led the Lady Tigers to a 55-32 victory over Lexington Trinity Christian, their first season opening victory since 2006.

The guard pumped in 26 points, snagged 10 rebounds and picked off four steals in the opener.

Drake chipped in 14 points an also had five steals.

Rockdale began to pull away from Trinity in the second quarter and led 22-16 at intermission.

The Lady Tigers continued to separate in the second half, outscoring Trinity 33-16.
