Recognized for college readiness

RISD REPORT
Dr. Howell Wright

I n 2001 the Texas Legislature created Gold Performance Acknowledgements to recognize districts and campuses for high performance in areas in addition to those used to determine state accountability ratings.

In 2011 the Rockdale ISD earned a Gold Performance Acknowledgement for College Ready Graduates from the Texas Education Agency. To earn this distinction 40 percent or more of the 2010 graduates scored at or above the college ready criteria on both the English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments.

This is an exceptional honor and is one of the signs that our teachers are doing a good job of preparing our students for their future and that RISD is meeting the district goal of preparing students for college and career readiness.

Additionally, Rockdale High School has earned the 2011 College Readiness award from The Texas American College Testing Council (ACT). Only five percent of Texas High Schools received this honor. The ACT is a college admissions test that is used and accepted by colleges throughout the state and nation. The ACT measures college readiness standards in English, Reading, Mathematics and Science.

Rockdale High School is recognized by the Texas ACT Council for increasing the number of students taking the ACT over the past five years and for increasing and maintaining student participation in the ACT. Another distinguishing merit for this award is the significant increase of achievement by Rockdale students on the ACT and for increasing the percentage of students meeting college readiness standards.

These are two ver y important awards the Rockdale ISD and Rockdale High School have earned. Both of these awards indicate there are many great things occurring with the students on our campuses.

It is important for our district to maintain our focus on college and career readiness standards since the new STAAR will measure a student’s readiness on the college and career standards in grades 3-11.

Have a great Thanksgiving break and may you and your family enjoy the blessings of the holiday.
