Big election season starts Monday
Milam voters to pick sheriff, judge, prosecutor, more in 2012 slate
Monday is the first day for candidates to file in what’s looming as a huge ballot for 2012 primary voters to decide.
There are already three contested primary races, all on the Republican ballot, and 10 persons have already announced their intentions to run for county offices in 2012.

Teens in court on capital murder
Pre-trial hearing held; another in January will set date
Two Rockdale- area teens charged with the shotgun slaying of a 50-year-old San Gabriel woman in April, appeared before District Judge John Young- blood in a pret rial hearing Monday.
Prosecutor Kerry Spears has announced she will seek the death penalty for Brandon Cotton in the murder of 50-year-old Sandra “Sandy” Phillips. Full Story
Burn ban lifted again until Sunday
For the second straight week, Milam County Judge Dave Barkemeyer has lifted Milam’s outdoor burning ban.
At presstime Tuesday morning, just under one inch of rain had fallen in Rockdale.
Barkemeyer also lifted the ban temporarily last week. It was reimposed on Sunday but lifted again the next day. Full Story
First Christian’s free Thanksgiving meal
First Christian Church of Rockdale will host its annual free Community Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24 at the church fellowship hall, corner of Bell and Scarbrough streets. Full Story
15 indicted from drug raid
Latest arrest made Saturday in Milam undercover sting
Fifteen persons named in arrest warrants on suspected drug-dealing in massive sweeps in Rockdale and Cameron in October were indicted Thursday by a Milam County grand jury.
Twelve of those indicted Thursday have already been arrested, the most recent on Saturday when 21-year-old Damion Damon Taylor of Cameron was charged with delivery of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone. Full Story

Burn victim dies, family tells police
A 29-year-old Houston man, whom Rockdale police said set himself on fire in a driveway Nov. 8, has died of his burns in a San Antonio hospital.
Police Chief Thomas Harris said the family of Gurjeet Singh notified them Friday that Singh had died in Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio.
Harris said Singh had sustained critical burns over 90 percent of his body. Full Story
As official as it gets
Populations signs have been changed at the entrances to Milam County’s two largest towns and it’s now about as official as its gets: Rockdale is the biggest town in Milam County. That’s what the 2010 Census figures, released in February by the U. S. Census Bureau, indicated. Full Story
