As official as it gets

Populations signs have been changed at the entrances to Milam County’s two largest towns and it’s now about as official as its gets: Rockdale is the biggest town in Milam County. That’s what the 2010 Census figures, released in February by the U. S. Census Bureau, indicated. The 2010 count listed a population of 5,595 for Rockdale, just 43 more than the 5,552 living in Cameron. Rockdale gained 2.9 percent over the 5,439 counted in 2000. Cameron lost 1.5 percent from the 2000 figure of 5,634. Prior to the 2010 count, Cameron had logged a bigger population than Rockdale in every census dating back to the founding of Rockdale in 1873. Rockdale’s 2010 population is just 16 short of the town’s all-time census high count, 5,611 in 1980. Populations for other Milam County towns in 2010 were: Thorndale, 1,336; Buckholts, 515; Milano, 428. Milam County’s population was put at 24,757.
