School holidays start Friday or Wednesday

Christmas-New Year’s holidays get under way either Friday or Wednesday in South Milam C ou nt y, depend i ng on you r location.

Friday is the last day of classes in 2011 for Thorndale and Gause students. Both return to classes Jan. 3.

Rockdale and Milano students will be in class until Wednesday, Dec. 21.

Rockdale students are back Jan. 4, while Milano students return Jan. 9.

Rotary coat drive now under way in Rockdale

The Rockdale Rotary Club has begun its annual coat drive to provide winter warmth for the needy.

Anyone wanting to donate a new coat or “gently used” coat, child or adult sizes, may drop it off at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Rock House or Miller- Starnes Chevrolet-Buick.

City council gathers; MDD to meet Thursday

Rockdale City council members okayed routine items dealing with the city’s Community Development Block Grant in a 24-minute session Monday.

The grant will fund a water line on MLK and Third Streets.

In other business, the council cast its 173.5 votes for Don Culp for Milam County Appraisal District (MCAD) director and tabled action on repairing/replacing an airport water well and street sweeper.

MDD—Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) will meet in regular session at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall to continue its process for hiring a manager/business recruiter.

P&Z—The Rockdale Planning & Zoning Commission will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.

Thorndale ISD gets clean audit for 2010-11

THORNDALE—School trustees in the Thorndale ISD met in regular session Monday and accepted a “clean” 2010-11 audit report from auditor Archie Montemayor.

In other business, board members accepted five of eight students applying for transfers into the Thorndale ISD and hired math teacher Mark Evans.

Rockdale trustees set meeting for Thursday

Rockdale ISD trustees will meet at 12-noon Thursday, following their annual Christmas luncheon in the RHS Family Consumer Science room.

Capital Area Food Bank visits KC Hall Thursday

The monthly visit of the Capital Area Food Bank’s mobile pantry to Rockdale is set for 9 a. m. Thursday at the KC Hall.

“Since the distribution relies totally on volunteer help, volunteers will be greatly appreciated,” Denise Sifuentes, organizer, said.

POSGCD committee to meet on Thursday

MILANO—The rules committee of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday in the district office.

There is no POSGCD board meeting in December.
