Rebate checks down for Rockdale

State tax revenue up for 20 straight months

AUSTIN—Texas Comptroller Susan Combs sent out $478.3 million in December sales tax allocations last week to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose tasking districts. That is up 9.7 percent compared to December 2010.

Combs said that state sales tax revenue in November was $2.07 billion, up 12.2 percent compared to November 2010. State sales tax revenue has now increased for 20 consecutive months, according to the Comptroller’s office.

Tax rebate checks are down compared to December 2010 for Rockdale. However, Milam County saw an increase compared with the same time last year.

Rockdale’s rebate check for December 2011 was $38,884, compared to $42,014 for December 2010, down 7.4 percent. The city is down 10.5 percent for the year, receiving $618,528 in 2011.

Rockdale’s Municipal Development District received $22,638 for December, up 12.8 percent from last year for the month.

Milam Count y ’s check for December was $85,268, up 11.9 percent from $76,148 a year ago. The county’s total of $1,012,934 for the year still down just half a percentage point.

The sales tax figures represent sales that occurred in October.

STAT EWIDE—“ Sa les ta x revenue in all major economic sectors improved over a year ago,” Combs said. “ While sales tax receipts associated with oil and natural gas production remains the strongest source of growth, there were strong increases from the consumer-driven sectors of retail trade and restaurants.”

Texas cities received $315.8 million, up 8.6 percent compared to December 2010. So far this calendar year, city sales tax allocations are up 7.2 percent compared to the same time period last year.

Sales tax allocations to counties are running 13.7 percent ahead of this point in 2010, with $31.3 million going out to them in December.

Combs also sent $22.2 million to special purpose taxing districts, up 19.5 percent compared to December a year ago. Transit systems in the state received a total of $108.7 million in sales tax allocations for December, up 8.6 for the year.
