NEW YEAR—As part of the DPS “Operation Holiday” effort, troopers will be out in force this week, centering on the New Year’s Eve period Saturday night.

“Additional troopers will be on the road targeting areas where drunk driving is most likely to occur,” Assistant Director Luis Gonzalez of the Texas Highway Patrol Division said.

During the 2010 holiday period, troopers made 1,264 DWI arrests throughout Texas and issued 17,346 speeding citations, 2,426 safety restraint citations, 2,593 no-insurance citations, made 1,284 felony or fugitive arrests and recovered 50 stolen vehicles.

Troopers reminded New Year’s Eve celebrants to not drink and drive and to use a designated driver who will not drink.
