Lowest amount of permits issued since 1996

City building projects totaled just $956,168 in calendar 2011

One new house and one new business building were about all the new growth Rockdale saw in 2011, as the area is as is the nation, still struggling from a sluggish economy. There were lots of remodel and add-on permits issued for home construction.

There were no new homes built in the city limits in 2010, nor were there in 2009.

Permits totaled just 956,168.19, down from $1,891,935 in 2010. It is also the lowest total since 1996, where just $858,117 in permits were issued.

City building permits were way up for the month, due in large part to a new 4,400 square foot building in the east part of town. Permits totaled $50,850 for December 2011 compared to just $10,700 in November.

GFL America, whose warehouses are located on north US 77 near the eastern city limits, constructed a $45,000 new steel building during the month to make up a majority of the December total.

Last month’s amount brings the total for the 2011 calendar year to $956,168.19.

October began a new fiscal year for the city, so the fiscal year total is now at $95,050.

June’s total of $336,137.98, was the highest month for the calendar year.

The largest amount of construction permits issued in recent years was in 2008 where $30.8 million (a record amount) included the addition of a new campus, a doubling of the high school and improvements at the elementary and junior high for Rockdale ISD.

For the fourth straight year, there was still no action on the land purchased in 2007 from Wal-Mart properties by a developer out of Ruston, Louisiana, who had once planned a strip mall at that site.

DECEMBER–Permits are issued at City Hall and reflect only construction in the city limits.

Projects permitted for December were: Ricky Owens, 718 Riley, move mobile home; Paul Freeman for GFL America LLC, 342 North US 77, 4,400 sq. ft. steel building; Rockdale Welding Supply, 2004 W. Cameron Avenue, sign; Harold Parsley III, 333 W. Cameron Avenue, move house to Scarbrough Street.
