Reporter/Mike Brown Rockdale Junior-High School Band Members with UIL trophy after earning three Division I (Superior) ratings at concert and sight-reading contest in Burnet last week. Reporter/Mike Brown If the Rockdale Junior-High Band’s success at last week’s UIL concert and sight-reading contest wasn’t a hair-rasing experience, it was certainly a “hair lifting” one for their director.

The band earned three Division I (Superior) ratings, the highest rankings possible for a junior-high band. Walker had previously promised if that happened, he would shave off his beard.

The band held up its end of the bargain during the competition at Burnet High School and Walker “went under the knife” before the happy bus ride home. In fact it happened just as soon as the ratings were announced.

“The kids did a fantastic job and I couldn’t be prouder of them,” a now smooth-faced Walker told The Reporter.

About the only thing which could have made the day any sweeter was to find out one of the judges was a former RJH, and RHS director. And that’s exactly what happened.

“They far exceeded my expectations,” Jim Perry told The Reporter. “Rockdale’s was the best band of the day, by far.”

Only six of the 21 bands competing earned “straight 1’s.”

Walker said the band will perform at The Colony High School in the DFW Metroplex at 9:20 a.m. April 14.
