Here’s your ‘cue’

Park hosting festival, cookoff, carnival and more this weekend

Here it is, October again. Wait, it’s not really October but you might be forgiven for thinking it’s Fair weekend when you enter Fair Park on Saturday.

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce is presenting its first annual Milam County Festival & Barbecue Cookoff on Friday and Saturday.

The barbecue cookoff at the annual October Fair is always one of the main attractions and the one this weekend should be comparable to the Fair’s in size, scope, scale and yumminess with about 70 teams expected to turn out for the sanctioned competition.

It even adds chili to the list.

Cooks will turn in chili Friday night and beans, chicken, ribs and brisket through the day Saturday.

There’s a rib eating contest Friday night with a cash prize for the winner.

Awards will be presented Saturday afternoon. You can see the article on page 1A for a complete schedule and times.

Downloadable forms to enter the cookoff, with full rules and a map, are available by going to and clicking on “events.”

Also Friday there will be karaoke by Full House Entertainment.

Saturday is the big day with arts and crafts, food booths, a horseshoe tourney, a carnival, more karaoke and “people’s choice” barbecue voting.

More than two dozen vendors have already signed up for the weekend.

Also, Brian and Carrie Weaks will perform Saturday morning with Lee Baker and the Kydells performing Saturday night under the pavilion.

If you recall many of those activities are also part of the Rockdale Fair, you’re right. It’s going to be quite a weekend—M.B.
