Mental evaluation follows two-hour ‘standoff’ Friday

SHERIFF’S REPORT

A 64-year-old Rockdale-area man was taken to Scott & White Hospital for a mental evaluation, following a two-hour standoff behind a closed door Friday afternoon.

Elmer Weller surrendered to Sheriff David Greens without incident, according to Chief Deputy Chris White.

White said the sheriff and three deputies were called to Weller’s residence in the 3000 block of South US 77 at 12:15 p.m. for a “shots fired” report.

“ The report was that a man had discharged a gun outside and then locked himself inside his bathroom closet,” White said. “The subject demanded he be left alone and refused to come out of the bathroom.”

Greene, deputies and State Trooper David Yarbrough secured the area and attempted to negotiate. “After about two hours the subject began to talk to the sheriff through the door and surrendered shortly thereafter,” White said.
