Rockdale’s Dorman catches calf at Houston

Thirty 4-H and FFA exhibitors battle in scramble

HOUSTON—One local scrambler won big in Reliant Stadium during the 2012 Rodeo Houston Calf Scramble.

P re ston Dor ma n of t he Rockdale FFA grabbed a calf at the Houston Rodeo’s March 12 performance. His sponsor is Axys Industrial Solutions.

Thirty exhibitors, representing 4-H clubs and FFA chapters across the state of Texas, took to the dirt of Reliant Stadium, vying for their chance of catching and haltering one of the 14 calves.

Strength and determination took over for some, as scramblers began to capture the calves and pull them into the winners’ square.

In exchange for a successful scramble, the 4-H or FFA member will receive a $1,250 certificate to be used for the purchase of a registered breeding beef heifer, breeding dairy heifer or market steer.

This is the beginning of a yearlong project of grooming, feeding and caring for the animal.

The exhibitor, supervised by an agricultural science teacher or county extension agent, must keep accurate and detailed records of the heifer or steer’s progress, submitting records to both the Show and calf scramble donor to chronicle its development.

In 2013, the exhibitor will return with his/ her scramble project to the Houston Livestock Show for a special competition and a $250 bonus from his/her donor.
