Time to order turkey, broilers for Rockdale Fair
I t is time to order turkeys and broilers for the 2012 Rockdale Fair. Those 4-H’ers ordering turkeys and broilers need to submit orders to the Milam County Extension Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 20. Make sure you review the 2012 Rockdale Fair Rules posted on the Milam County Extension Office website, agrilifeextension.tamu.edu. If you have questions, contact the extension office at 254-697-7045.
If you are ordering turkeys, you must order a minimum of five poults per exhibitor. All orders are in multiples of five. The cost for turkeys is $4.30 per bird. If you are ordering broilers, you must order a minimum of 25 chicks per entry. The cost for broilers is $1.46 per bird. Make checks payable to Rockdale Fair Association, payment must be received by April 20 deadline.
MAJOR SHOW TAG ORDERS—It is time to purchase Major Livestock Show Validation Tags. If you plan to show steers at the major shows or goats, sheep and swine at the State Fair of Texas, you must order your tags by 5 p.m. on April 16 at the Milam County Extension Office. The cost is $12 per tag. Tags ordered after the deadline will cost $30 per tag. You may order tags through an FFA advisor, but the Milam County Extension Office must receive the order and fee by the April 16 deadline.
Here are the shows accepted by this tag order: Steers 2012—State Fair of Texas and Heart of Texas or 2013—Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston, Star of Texas; Lambs, goats, swine 2012—State Fair of Texas; The 2013 Milam County Jr. Livestock Show will accept major steer tags.
The exhibitor that orders these tags will need to bring their animals to validation on June 26. At validation, your livestock project and a parent must be present to complete validation. If a parent is unavailable to attend validation, you must contact the extension office prior to the validation to complete the required paperwork. Additional information on validation will be provided to the persons ordering tags.
HORSE SHOW VALIDATION— If you are planning to enter the District or State Horse activities, you must complete Horse Validation materials by May 1. Horse Validation will be processed through 4-H Connect from April 1 to May 1. The cost is $10 per horse. Information on horse validation is available in the March 4-H Newsletter posted on our website, milam. agrilife.org.
COUNTY CAMP—It is time to sign-up for county 4-H camp at the Methodist Conference Center in Palestine. Camp dates are July 6-8. This is a great opportunity to have a fun camping experience with 4-H’ers from Milam County as well as 4-H’ers from Robertson, Navarro, Limestone, Leon, Johnson, Hill, Freestone and Falls counties.
The camp is designed for 4- H’ers from 8 to 13. Sign-up is on a first come basis by June 1. Older 4-H’ers can sign-up to be teen leaders for camp by May 15. Teen 4-H’ers will be teaching the sessions with agent and volunteer assistance. You will have a variety of fun activities at camp.
