Milano bags first state tournament appearance

BRENHAM—The Milano golf program may be in its infancy compared to other schools, but its catching on fast.

Becoming the first Milano boys team to compete at a state meet, the Eagles’ shot a two- day 725 at the Brenham Country Club on Mond ay and Tues- day to win the Class A, Region IV tour nament and advance to the state tournament held at Austin’s Lions Municipal Golf Course on May 3-4.

The upstart Eagles fought off Flatonia for a two-stroke victory after finishing second to the Bulldogs at the District 27A tournament last week by 14 strokes.

Flatonia—will also make a trip to the state tournament—led by eight strokes after the first round at regional.

Leading the way for Milano was sophomore Toby Sanders who fired in a 85-89—174 and was sixth overall.

Mik Mader followed closely with a 90-85—175, while Derek Walton carded a 88- 90-178, Jacob Willingham a 92-106—198 and Tyde Taylor 134-131—265.

“ What an exciting day for these guys,” said Milano Coach Robbie Robinson. “Most of them kept their driver in the bag for the most part and tried to keep the ball in the fairway.”
