200 runners/walkers raise $6,000

Austin entries take 5K, 10K ‘Dewberry Jam/ honors

Reporter/Mike Brown It was a day for the “big city” boys (and girls) Saturday as the 13th annual Dewberry Jam Fun Run unreeled under crisp, sunny spring weather.

Men’s 10K and 5K winners Chass A rmstrong and R io Reina are Austin residents.

Women’s 5K winner Hellen Rotich hails from Austin suburb Manor and Amy Shackelford, who captured the women’s 10K is a San Antonio native.

It was the second year for a 10K event at the fun run, sponsored by Alpha Tau Delta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi which raised $6,000 for the sorority’s upgrade projects for Rockdale parks.

In its 13 years the runs have raised $78,000.

WINNERS—Reina clocked in at 15:23 to win the 5K and Armstrong’s winning 10K time was 32:34.

Perennial champ Rotich captured the women’s 5K in 18: 05 and Shackelford won the women’s 10K with a time of 36:26.

Shackelford was the third overall finisher, behind only A rmstrong and r unner- up Gerardo Moreno of Nacogdoches, the 2011 champ.

Top finishers in the walkers division were both Rockdale residents, with Guillermo Pantaleon the first man across the line and Vickie Caffey the first woman.

Two hundred persons participated. Results were listed as follows:
