County approves transport officers for new jail deal

CAMERON—Milam County commissioners, meeting in regular session Monday at the courthouse, okayed hiring two new deputies as part of the recently announced deal to house Coryell County prisoners at the Milam County Jail.

Sheriff David Greene said the new transport officers will be paid as “jail deputies, not street deputies” and duties will include transporting prisoners from Gatesville.

Raymond Ortiz was named as the first jail transport officer.

The new five-year contract between Milam and Coryell counties goes into effect on May 15. A budget amendment will be needed for funding.
