Early voting starts—finally!—for Texas’ long-delayed primary elections on May 14. As if the long, drawn-out saga of “when do we vote” wasn’t confusing enough, Rockdale residents need to be aware there have been changes in polling places for the 2012 primaries.
And they are substantial. We will no longer vote at locations which in some cases have served as polling places for as much as a quarter century.
It starts right away, too. Rockdale’s early voting location is now the Rockdale Juvenile Justice Center on FM 487 (Ackerman). It had been the Precinct 3 office in the One-Stop Center.
But May 29 is when most of Rockdale really needs to pay attention. Voters in Precinct 4 won’t be going to Fair Park to cast ballots in the New Salem HD Clubhouse which has been a voting location since 1986.
The new location is the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church. You can’t miss it, it’s a big building behind the church, Bell Street between Green and San Gabriel.
Why the change? County Clerk Barbara Vansa said the Family Life Center’s facilities are far superior for elderly and disabled voters.
In past elections, she said, complaints have been received about unpaved streets and having to walk on rocks to enter the clubhouse.
Also, the Precinct 207 polling place changes to the Juvenile Justice Center from the senior citizen center.
The Precinct 318 voting location remains the Rockdale VFD Fire Station.—M.B.
