Music Week events to start Monday
Monday will mark the 88th annual observance of National Music Week. The National Federation of Music Clubs through National Music Week provides an opportunity for organized musical forces, which include religious, educational and civic groups, to join music enthusiasts throughout the country as they emphasize the joy and pleasure gained from making and listening to music.
Locally, the Matinee Musical Club of Rockdale, as a member of the both the Texas and the National Federation of Music Clubs will again sponsor this year’s celebration with the theme: “Music-Sounds that Inspire.”
Events will begin May 6 and end May 13, as local churches are encouraged to participate with the inclusion of the hymn “Blessed Assurance” in the worship services.
At 4 p.m. Monday, Elisabeth Thomason, a senior at Milano High School and daughter of Matinee Musical Club past president Leah Thomason, will perform her senior piano recital at Temple College.
Other events scheduled for the week will include a tribute to NMW dur ing the regular weekly Story Hour at the city library; piano students of Dixie Whitmore, also known as the Keyboard Melody Makers, the Junior Music Club under the wings of the Matinee Musical Club, w ill perform at 4 p. m. Thursday, May 10, at Manor Oaks Nursing Home.
On Fr iday, May 11, at t he Rockdale Intermediate School, and again at the Rockdale Junior High School, the Matinee Musical Club will host identical performances at 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. respectively.
Those will feature a history of the National Federation of Music Clubs using musical examples from the last century and will reflect various music styles (classical, jazz, Broadway, and music of popular commercials).
