Suspected LSD, ‘designer’ drugs among local stops

Rockdale police filed 17 drug charges during the weekend, basically representing stops of vehicles heading north out FM 908 to the Nocturnal Wonderland music festival, according to Lt. J. D. Newlin.

“ They were pretty much all from vehicles either running a stop sign or speeding,” Newlin said. “We’d stop them and find illegal substances,” he said.

But more charges are anticipated. “We’re seeing substances that we’re either not familiar with or don’t have the capacity to test locally, such as suspected LSD,” he said.

“We’ve sent 30 samples off to the DPS drug lab and anticipate filing charges on 10 or 12 additional cases, if those tests reveal additional illegal substances,” he said.

“This year we saw additional ‘designer drugs’ and there were a few surprises,” he said. “One vehicle had four persons in it. Three of them had what we believe to be LSD and the fourth had ketamine, a controlled substance veterinarians use to tranquilize animals.”

Newlin said drug users are becoming “more sophisticated” in acquiring substances which mimic designer drugs, but are not yet classified as illegal.

“And we got a lot of marijuana this year,” he added.
