Area players top all-Brazos Valley basketball squad

Rockdale, Milano well represented on Eagle’s team

The 37th edition of the Bryan- College Station Eagle’s All-Brazos Valley basketball team had a distinct Milam county flavor to it.

Aubrie King of Mumford and John Jentsch of Milano were named to the first team, while Jentsch’s teammate Dominique Messer was placed on the second team and Rockdale freshman sensation Velma Mitchell was put on the third team.

The 6-foot-6 sophomore King led Mumford to the state tournament and a 36-1 record by averaging 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists per game.

Former King teammate John Jentsch led 32-3 Milano to the regional finals in a memorable battle with Mumford after the 6- foot-4 senior averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds an outing.

King and Jentsch were both first-team, all-state selections.

The 6-4 jumping jack Messer collected 14 points and 11 boards a game as a junior.

The 5-9 Mitchell lead a resurgent Lady Tiger basketball team to a 17-13 mark, their first winning season since 2006.

Mitchell was the of fensive MVP of district 23-3A after logging 16 points, six rebounds and three steals a game.

The freshman shot 57 per cent from the field and nailed 52 three-pointers and led Class A in free throw shooting.
