Kovar resigns Normangee job

NORMA NGEE—Former Rockdale assistant John Kovar has resigned as head football coach at Normangee after less than t wo mont h s on the job.

Kovar cited conflicts with the school board con- cerning potential personnel as the reason for his abrupt resignation.

“I thought there was a lack of support from the board on a few things,” Kovar told the Bryan-College Station Eagle. “Due to that, I couldn’t see moving my family over there. It’s a very unfortunate deal, because there are some great kids in that community. They’re going to do some good things.”

Embattled Normangee superintendent Jerry Burger confirmed that Kovar left because of concerns about the direction of the athletic program.

“It’s nothing John did wrong at all,” Burger said. “He just didn’t feel that the direction things were heading, maybe from what he was promised as the AD, was working out for him.

“He did a great job while he was here. It just didn’t, for some reason, work out. We hate that John’s not here, but we’re going to move forward on it.”

Kovar, who was in Rockdale for six years, was hired by Normangee in April. He replaced longtime coach Brian Mullinnix, who resigned for health reasons.
