Rockdale coach Eric Willard assists Scott Penny (left) and Connor Stone in the football portion of the RISD summer sports camp. Despite the fact that it is already underway, it’s not too late to get in on the fun of the RISD summer sports camps.

The camps began June 4, but that is just the first session, and all camps are for second through seventh graders.

The second session begins June 11 and goes through the 14th and includes baseball and softball instruction.

The third camp sessions kicks off June 18 and lasts through the 21st and is strictly basketball.

The final session runs from June 25-28 with instruction in track and field.

Due to an after school enrichment grant from the iTigers program, there is no charge for the camps for any RISD student.

Rockdale Athletic Director Jeff Miller says that 230 kids have already signed up for the four sessions.

Camp coordinators include Sandy Wynn, Susan Boyd and Brooksey Fisher.

Camp instructors are made up of the RISD coaching staff.

Campers will need to wear comfortable T-shirts, shorts or sweats and athletic shoes each day to camp.

Cleats are optional for the baseball, football and softball camps, but will not be allowed on the gym floors.

Gloves will be required for the baseball and softball camps.

So, if you are looking for something to keep your little athlete busy during the summer months, the Rockdale athletic department has plenty to keep them occupied.

“Our annual sports camps provide an important building block for the championship level teams we are creating here in Rockdale,” Miller said. “We are hoping to prepare the younger kids for the junior high athletic program and the older kids for the high school athletic program.”
