The former Rockdale standout, who has been a coach at Lockhart for the past six years, was approved by the board on Monday night as was his wife Carla (also a 2001 RHS grad), who will teach Math.

“My family and I are excited about moving back home, we still have family members here,” he said. “My wife and I have been waiting for job opportunities to come available for the both of us. This year it finally worked out. I am looking forward to working for the Rockdale school district and coaching the Tigers.”

“A ndre and I had talked a couple of years ago about the possibility of him coming here,” said Rockdale Athletic Director Jeff Miller. “This is a great opportunity for both of us.”

Miller says that Johnson will likely be coaching the linemen and helping out in track.

Johnson, who graduated from RHS in 2001, stills holds most of the school powerlifting records in the heavyweight division (275 pounds).

He earned trips to the state powerlifting meet his junior and senior years, earning a second place medal his senior year, when his lifting total eclipsed the Class 3A state record.

Johnson, was also a standout football player, earning firstteam, all-district honors as an offensive lineman.

Johnson joins a short list of former Tiger athletes who have returned to Rockdale to become a coach.

(Rockdale has had only one head football coach from Rockdale, that was Graham Kyle in 1947-48.)

During Johnson’s tenure at Lockhart, the Lions made back- to-back playof f appearances (2008-09) for the first time in over 50 years.

“He and his wife will provide us with two great teachers in the classroom,” Miller said.
