Tigers’ Stewart named to coaches All-State team
Stewart was placed on the third team as a second baseman although the versatile glovesman played several different positions for the Tigers.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Stewart was a major factor in the Tigers’ resurgence this season as they posted a 20-14 mark and captured a playoff series for the first time since 2009.
Rockdale was knocked out of the playoffs in the area round by No. 2 Bridge City.
In his only season on the varsity, Stewart’s .337 batting average and 25 runs batted in were second on the team from the cleanup spot. His two home runs was tops for the Tigers. He was also 2-2 on the mound.
Stewart was given the team’s silver slugger award.
“Hitting in the four-hole for us this year, John came up huge,” said first-year Rockdale Coach Clay Cox. “He finished second behind Ethan Brinkley in RBIs and runs as well as batting average. He lead the team in home runs and was an offensive spark plug throughout the year. He leaves big shoes to fill in the clean up spot next year”
Oddly, Stewart was no better than an honorable mention pick on the 24-3A all-district team, chosen three weeks ago.
Stewart is the fifth Tiger to be named all-state in the past five years.
Weston Wick of LaGrange—the District 24-3A MVP— was a firstteam selection as a pitcher.
Tanner Luna of Caldwell—the district’s offensive MVP—was a second-team pick at second base.
