Milano Fourth of July parade scheduled

MILANO—The annual Fourth of July parade in Milano begins at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July Fourth from the MISD football field parking lot, according to Carolyn Vinton, spokesperson.

She said the parade will end at the Milano Civic Center/Fire Station, where free hot dogs will be served.

RDA directors to hear about new master plan

The Rockdale Downtown Association will hold its regular monthly session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 2) at Dyess Insurance Agency.

Chris Dyess, RDA president, said the group will hear a report from Jim Carrillo of Halff Associates on the Rockdale Downtown Master Plan.

“We will also be giving feedback on the plan report,” he said.

Dyess invited all persons interested in the future of downtown Rockdale to attend the meeting.

One injured in Milano area accident last week

A 24-year-old Milano man was injured in a one-vehicle accident last Wednesday (June 20), near that town according to the Department of Public Safety.

Trooper Ernest DelBosque said Gerald Stewart-Dykes was taken to Scott & White Hospital, Temple by an AMR ambulance crew following the 6:15 p.m. accident.

DelBosque said Dykes’s vehicle left US 79 east of the Milano city limits and struck a tree.

Vehicle damages were termed extensive, according to Del- Bosque.

Area VFDs respond to six blazes in week

Fire calls dispatched from the Rockdale Police Station during the past week were listed as follows:

• 2:36 p.m. June 20, Milano VFD called for mutual aid by Cameron VFD for large grass fire.

• 10:02 p.m. Thursday, car fire, Julio’s Restaurant, Rockdale VFD.

• 8:57 p.m. Saturday, smoke scare, FM 485 and Big Brazos, Gause VFD.

• 11:36 a.m. Sunday, dumpster fire, Calhoun and West Cameron (US 79), Rockdale VFD.

• 12:31 p.m. Saturday, barn and trailer fire, County Road 457, Thorndale VFD.

• 12:15 a.m. Monday, utility pole fire, FM 908 south of Rockdale, Rockdale VFD.

‘Brown Santa’ golf tourney set in July

The second annual Brow n Santa Golf Tourney will be held at t he C ameron C ou ntry Club July 21, according to Sheriff David Greene.

Last year’s tourney drew 94 golfers, over 50 hole sponsors and raised around $5,000 to provide Christmas gifts to 300 children in over 100 families.

Deputy Sheriff John Mendoza said the tourney will begin with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Format will be a 4-to-6-man scramble. “You don’t have to be on a team to play,” he said. “We are encouraging all interested persons to come out, play and have a great time for a great cause.”

To enter, RSVP to Mendoza at 254-627-1270 or 254-697-7033 with team info and whether a cart will be needed.

“You can also sign up at the Cameron Country Club,” he said.

Deadline to enter is July 14.

Cost is $50 per person, which includes green fees, a goody bag and snacks.

Mendoza said the tourney is also accepting hole sponsorships at $100 per hole.

MDD board set to meet Thursday at City Hall

The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) board will meet in regular session at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, according to Tom Manskey, executive director.

Agenda items include a report on the Hunters Chase housing project.

Other items for discussion included a downtown master plan update, the preliminary 2012 MDD budget and a project application for Place of Hope Pregnancy Center.

ARB set to convene Tuesday in Cameron

CA MERON—The appraisal review board (ARB) of the Milam Appraisal District (AD) will meet 8:15 a.m. Tuesday in the AD offices to continue its series of hearing tax protests from county property owners.
