71 cookers ‘smoke em’ in Thorndale

Local BBQ team ‘Double A’ takes f1rst place honor

Reporter/Mike Brown Seventy-one barbecue teams from around Central Texas stepped up to the pits Saturday, but in the end it was a local Thorndale team that captured top honors in the 22nd annual Thorndale VFD Barbecue Cookoff.

“ Double A Cookers & a B,” led by pitmaster Russell Niemtschk won the best overall category, compiled by adding points from individual divisions.

Second overall was Dirty BBQ, led by Matt Perez of Granger. Third was Czexicans 2, Terry Skrhak of Taylor.

The 2012 cookoff was held under near 100-degree temperatures and featured dances, a baseball tourney, washer and horseshoe tourneys and was preceded by the annual Miss Thorndale Revue, won by Kelbi Kovar.
