Responsibility seems to be a lost virtue

“L iberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it.”—George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman, “Maxims: Liberty and Equality,” 1905

In today’s society responsibility is too often overlooked. It is so important to remember this Independence Day that our freedoms are not a guarantee and blood, sweat and tears were sacrificed so we could have the liberties we have.

We must be ready to devote the same responsibilities that our ancestors did or we will lose the gifts of liberty and independence that they have given us. We need to be instilling the value of responsibility in our children so that their liberties are protected as well.

I wish you all a safe and happy Independence Day.

MEMBERSHIP—If you are a business or an individual who is not a member of the chamber but would like to be, please call me at 512-446-2030 and let me show you the benefits of being a chamber member. The chamber needs a business to host the July mixer. If you are interested, please call or email me.

KIDS SHOE DRIVE—We are also helping Meadowbrook Baptist Church with their annual shoe drive for our school kids. This is kicking off now and we will collect new shoes thru July so if you find a good deal pick up a pair and bring it by or stop by with your monetary donation.

If you are in need of shoes for your child, you can call the chamber at 446-2030 with gender and size information.

Pick up will be from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 at the Meadowbrook Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

OUTDOOR EXPO—The Chamber is gearing up for its second annual Central Texas Hunting and Outdoor Expo which will be held Sept. 21-22. We are so excited that our feature band this year will be the famous, “Little Texas.” You will not want to miss this event.

We are taking applications for vendors and barbecue teams. So get your spot asap. I will also be coming to see many of my business owners for sponsorships. We expect huge crowds so I know we are all looking forward to that.

I hope you all have a great week.

Deedra Jacob is the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce president. Email her at djacob@rockdalechamber.com or phone 446-2030.
