Aglow to meet Thursday

Rockdale Aglow Neighborhood Lighthouse group will meet on Thursday, July 12 at the Rockdale General Store meeting room, according to Sabrina Thompson, spokesperson.

Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. with the guest speakers Keith and Nancy Norman of Unshackled Ministries to begin at 7 p.m.

The Normans outreach to youth and adult prisons, churches, rehabilitation/ transitional houses and youth groups.

‘Shoes for School’ drive

Meadowbrook Baptist Church is sponsoring a Shoes for School drive to help students in need to go back to school in new shoes. (See Organizations, page 4B, for details.)

Outreach Center movie

A free movie night was set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 at the Rockdale Outreach Center, 195 FM 487 (Ackerman Street). The movie “WWJD” will be shown. Everyone is invited, said center director Gunar Gerthe.

Allen AME homecoming

Allen AME Church, 216 East Third Street in Rockdale, Rev. George Morgan, pastor, will host its 137th-year church homecoming at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15.

Guest speaker will be Pastor Royal Johnson of Rising Star Baptist Church in Rockdale. “The public is invited,” said Carolyn Cooper, Allen AME Church secretary.

Thrift store volunteers

Member churches supply volunteers to work at the Rockdale Christian Services Heavenly Treasures thrift store serving the needy.

Pleasant Retreat VBS

THORNDALE— Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church will hold Vacation Bible School Thursday and Friday, July 12-13, spokesperson Linda Grimm announced.

“Operation Overboard: Dare to go Deep with God” will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for ages 5-11.

To get to Pleasant Retreat UMC, go south on FM 486 in Thorndale for 7.5 miles. Take a left on CR 458. The church is at the top of the hill on the right.

Meadowbrook VBS

A summer VBS family event called “Babylon” will be hosted at Meadowbrook Baptist Church July 15-18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. nightly. VBS is for those who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grades, but the whole family is encouraged to stay. FMI: 446-3367.

Milano UMC VBS

MILANO—Vacation Bible School will be held at the Milano United Methodist Church, 410 West Ave. D, from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Wednesday, July 23 to July 25. Kids 5-13 years old are welcome.

Milano FBC bake sale

MILANO—A bake sale has been set Friday, July 13 by Milano First Baptist Church to help defer costs for youth church camp. The sale will start at noon at the Cameron Auction Barn.

First Christian VBS

Vacation Bible School at First Christian Church, 231 Burleson Street, will be held July 29 to Aug. 2. Registration will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 29. VBS will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each night. FMI, call the church office, 446-5090.

St. John’s VBS Aug. 6-8

Vacation Bible School, with the theme “Operation Overboard,” will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 6- 8 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, a joint VBS with Peace Lutheran Church. Children ages 3 through 5th grade are invited. FMI, call the church office, 446-5853.

Women on Mission

Women on Mission of First Baptist Church, Rockdale, met July 4 in the Family Life Center for a mission focus program, “Winning West African Muslims in Harlem, New York City.”

Ramona Barlow was the focus leader. Others attending were Faye Simpson, Elaine Simpson, Barbara Clark, Laura Gary, Mary Lois Morgan, Ann Sonntag and Jane Robinson.

Men’s breakfast Aug. 14

An ecumenical Christian men’s breakfast fellowship is held from 7 to 8 a.m. each second Tuesday, the location rotating between several local churches.

Next breakfast will be held on Aug. 14 in the fellowship hall of St. John’s United Methodist Church.

“Purpose of the breakfast is Christian fellowship and all men of the area are invited to attend,” said Bill Avrett, spokesman.
