Chamber continues fan drive for needy

Imagine this summer without airconditioning. Now try to imagine it without even a fan.

Area residents can still donate fans to the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce’s annual fan drive, Deedra Jacob, Chamber president, reminds.

“We have given away 44 fans to date,” she said, “thanks to gracious donations from the community.”

Donations, either fans or funds for the cause, can be taken to the Chamber office, 1203 West Cameron Avenue.

‘Shoes for School’ drive to help needy students

Meadowbrook Baptist Church is sponsoring a Shoes for School drive to help students in need to go back to school in new shoes.

Tax-exempt donations can be made to Meadowbrook Baptist Church for the cause. Shoe donations can be dropped off at the church or the Chamber of Commerce office.

Sign - up for the shoes will be required so that correct sizes are bought. Parents whose children need shoes should call either 446-3367 ( Meadowbrook) or the Chamber (446-2030) to list the shoe sizes needed.

Collection will continue through July and distribution will be Thursday, Aug. 6 at the church fellowship hall.

VFW post conducting school supply drive

VF W Post 6525 and its Ladies Auxiliary are conducting the 2012 Rockdale school supply drive for students who cannot other wise afford the supplies and donations are needed.

Supplies may be taken to the VFW post home, 978 West US 79, or the Chamber of Commerce office, 1203 West Cameron Avenue.

Nmotion Dance holding auditions this Saturday

Nmotion Dance will hold auditions for the 2012-13 Nmotion Performance Team from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 14 at the dance studio, owner/director Desiree Marshall announced.

Bailey Building group hosts 100th celebration

MIL ANO— Friends of the Bailey Bank Building will hold a fund-raiser event, “Celebration 100,” at 7 p.m. Friday, July 27 at the Milano Civic Center, celebrating the 100th birthday of the Bailey Bank Building’s opening on July 27, 1912.

The Friends of the Bailey Bank Building group is working on turning the building into a museum, spokesperson Lynn Martin said. All funds raised will go towards that project.

The night will consist of music provided by local Milam County talent, food and fellowship. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. “Bring your family and enjoy a night of entertainment while supporting the history of Milano,” Martin said.

Town & Country Club reports on 3 meetings

THORNDALE—The Town & Country Club of Thorndale met in the Chamber of Commerce office June 14. Members played bingo and each brought a salad and its recipe to share. Donna Harris demonstrated a golf tee pin cushion and a beaded plant hanger. Sarah Lincoln demonstrated a painted wind chime made by her grandson.

Club members met June 28 at the Chamber office to construct items for their MARC Center event. Cartons were created to hold a hot dog, chips, napkin and a bottle of water. A dessert was also made the day of the event, July 5 at the MARC Center in Rockdale. Each client was furnished with a carton containing their lunch and a small American flag in keeping with the July 4 theme.

Members will go to Taylor on Thursday, July 12 for lunch at Sirloin Stockade. Next meeting will be on July 26, at the home of Nina Montebaro.— Darleen Tucker, secretary

Breast cancer benefit trail ride set August 4

A breast cancer benefit trail ride will be held for Olivia Taylor of Rockdale on Saturday, Aug. 4, starting at 2 p.m. at the Post Oak Community Center, FM 180, Giddings.

This family event will include music and kids’ activities. Admission is $10. Donations can be mailed to National Bank & Trust: Special Account for Olivia Taylor, PO Box 310, La Grange TX 78945. For more information, call 979-224-6905.

Grief support meetings held twice monthly

CAMERON—Standards Hospice is holding Grief Support Group meetings from 5 to 6 p.m. each second and fourth Wednesdays, according to Greg Nichols, bereavement coordinator. Location is Standards Hospice, 115 N. Central in Cameron. FMI call 254-284-0045, extension 2013.
