Greene gets new term in runoff
Big Cameron turnout helps incumbent roll
Sheriff David Greene rolled to a new term Tuesday in a Republican Primary runoff election ending what was probably the longest single Milam County primary contest ever.
Greene polled 1,560 votes to 1,177 for challenger Greg Kouba to win the GOP nomination. That’s a 57-percent to 43-percent spread. Full Story

Football gear to be issued at field house Aug. 6
The biggest sign that summer break is over...high school football and volleyball practices begin. And that is exactly what will happen Monday across the state of Texas.
Football equipment will be issued at the field house on Monday, Aug. 6, beginning at 7 a.m. sharp.
That will be followed by the first day of practice which is set to begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 11 a.m. Full Story
Talented draw in 33rd annual Rockdale Open
Youth winners crowned in first ever night tourney
John Swords of Temple is the men’s singles champion of the 2012 Rockdale Open held over the weekend at Veterans Memorial Park. He defeated David Cuebas of Taylor in the finals, 6-0, 6-1.
Swords is currently ranked in the top spot of the Texas United States Tennis Association’s 45 and under men’s singles. Cuebas is a four-time Rockdale Open champion. Full Story
Three Tigers named to TSWA state baseball squad
Brinkley 2nd team; Pounders, Stewart honorable mentions
Three Rockdale Tigers were named to the 58th annual Texas Sports Writers Association/ Collin Street Bakery Class 3A all-state baseball team last week.
Senior-to-be Ethan Brinkley was named to the second team outfield crews.
Tiger pitcher Tate Pounders and second baseman John Stewart were both honorable mentions. They both graduated from RHS in May. Full Story
Remodel permits big money in July
Rockdale Building Materials, Kay Theatre apply for big permits
Rockdale Building Materials and the Kay Theatre, both located on Main Street but on either side of US 79 applied for large remodel permits during July according to reports from Rockdale city hall.
Rockdale Building Materials hired Butch Malone to put on a new roof valued at $109,200 early in July. Another permit was issued last week to begin a $100,000 remodel at the company. Full Story

Sandow Mine receives OSM 2012 ‘good neighbor award’
NEW YORK—Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced last week that its Sandow Mine in Rockdale received the “Good Neighbor Award” in the 2012 Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Awards from Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM).
