Monday starts workouts for football players, spikers

Reporter file photo The biggest sign that summer break is over...high school football and volleyball practices begin. And that is exactly what will happen Monday across the state of Texas.

Football equipment will be issued at the field house on Monday, Aug. 6, beginning at 7 a.m. sharp.

That will be followed by the first day of practice which is set to begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 11 a.m.

Beginning the next day, Tuesday, Aug. 7, practice will be held from 7 to 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 until 2 p.m.

Because of new UIL guidelines which prohibit two-a-days on consecutive days, practices will alternate between the two schedules throughout summer practices.

The practice of Aug. 13 will mark the Tigers’ first practice in full pads.

While the opening day of the regular season is Friday, Aug. 31, when the Tigers travel to Salado for the 7:30 kickoff, Rockdale has a couple of scrimmages set up before then.

The Tigers host Marlin on Friday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. for their first scrimmage and then on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. will travel to Robinson.

The annual “Meet the Tigers” social and cake auction will take place Friday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. in Tiger Gymnasium.

VOLLEYBALL—Volleyball is set to start on Monday as well.

All participants must bring their own T-shirts and shorts for the first few days.

Workouts will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This schedule will continue through Aug. 10.

Fourth-year coach Jason Williams encourages everyone to arrive 15 minutes early.

A high school volleyball parents meeting will be held Thursday, Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. at the high school gym.

The Lady Tigers will scrimmage on Aug. 10 on the road at Luling and then open the season by traveling to Milano on Tues- day,Aug.14fora5p.m.match.

MEDICAL FORMS—If you are going to participate in Rockdale High School football, volleyball or cross-country this coming school year in grades 9-12, you must have all the required UIL and RISD medical forms turned in to the athletic office by Wednesday, July 25.

Students going into grades 9 and 11 must have a new physical examination and the four page “yellow form” packet.

Students going into the 10th and 12th grades only need to complete the “yellow form” packet if they already have a physical exam on-file from last year.

These medical forms may be picked up from the RISD Athletic office on Murray at Tiger Stadium.

Junior high football and volleyball athletes need their medical forms turned-in by Wednesday, Aug. 15.

New 7th grade athletes will need both the physical exam and the “yellow form” packet, while returning 8th grade athletes only need the “yellow form” packet.

RHS athletes other than football, volleyball or cross country need their medical forms turnedin the first week of school.

JUNIOR HIGH—Rockdale Junior High football and volleyball players can begin picking up their equipment on Wednesday, Aug. 15 with practices to begin on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Football equipment will be issued on Aug. 15 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. for eighth graders, while the seventh graders can receive their equipment from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Junior high players may purchase their own football cleats, but they must be black (some white trim is okay).

Practices begin Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 7 to 8:50 a.m. for seventh graders and at 2:51 to 4:40 p.m. for eighth graders.

Volleyball equipment will also be handed out on Aug. 15 for the eighth graders from 8 to 9 a.m. and the seventh graders from 9 to 10 a.m.

Practices begin Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Seventh graders will practice from 6:45 to 8:50 a.m. and eighth graders from 3:40 to 5 p.m.

All athletes must have physicals and other paper work turned in and on file to participate and get their equipment.

TICKETS—Advanced reserved seat football tickets for previous season ticket holders will be sold at the athletic office on Aug. 7-9 and Aug. 14-16 from 8 a.m. to noon.

If you would like to be placed on the waiting list for tickets, please call the athletic office at 430-6150 between 8 a.m. and noon.

Beginning Monday Aug. 21, anyone else wanting to purchase reserve seat season tickets may do so in the athletic office from 8 a.m. to noon.

The cost of season tickets will be $30 for five home games.

PRESS DAY—According to head coach Jeff Miller, picture day/press day for RHS football and athletic trainers has been set for Saturday, Aug. 11 beginning at 8 a.m. at Tiger Field.

Mom and sons picture will also be taken.

Volleyball pictures will be taken the same day at 8 a.m. in RHS Gymnasium.
