Talented draw in 33rd annual Rockdale Open

Youth winners crowned in first ever night tourney

Reporter/Marie Bakken John Swords of Temple is the men’s singles champion of the 2012 Rockdale Open held over the weekend at Veterans Memorial Park. He defeated David Cuebas of Taylor in the finals, 6-0, 6-1.

Swords is currently ranked in the top spot of the Texas United States Tennis Association’s 45 and under men’s singles. Cuebas is a four-time Rockdale Open champion.

Cuebas defeated last year’s Open champion Devin Boynton inthesemifinals. Boynton recently won two matches in the regional U.S. Open qualifying tournament.

“We probably had the most talented singles draw in the 33 years of this tournament,” adult division director Lee Thomason said.

James Howe of Florence and Yusef Barnes of Leander teamed up to take the mens doubles title. Howe is the professional at Cimarron Hills Country Club in Georgetown, while Barnes will play college tennis starting this fall at Johnson C. Smith College, a Division II power in North Carolina.

Reporter/Mike Brown Anna Maldonado of Rockdale and Monee Michna of Taylor won the women’s doubles title with a 2-0 record in a four-team bracket. Betty Malish and Tina Malish were runners-up.

The duo of Kacy Malish and Stephen Cortez of Taylor and Bartlett respectively, won the mixed doubles championship, defeating Rick Spencer (Galveston) and McKenzie Brown (Lexington) in the finals 6-2, 6-1.

YOUTH TOURNEY—Fifty one participants played in the Open’s youth tourney, this time played at night on Wednesday and Thursday on city and school courts. Winners were decided in 10 divisions.

“Parent, in particular, enjoyed being able to watch their kids after they got home from work, so we will be continuing with the night format for the youth next year,” Thomason said.

Jacob Cmerek of Taylor won the 18 boys singles title, defeating Wesley Pryor of Brenham 7-6, 6-3 in the final.

McKenna Kramer of Robinson took the 18 girls singles title in round robin bracket. Kacey Crump of Rockdale took second.

Other event winners were Colby Bexley of Lexington, 12 boy’s singles; Landry Laywell of Thorndale, 12 girl’s singles; Tiernan Avrett, of The Woodlands, 14 boy’s singles; Chandler Kramer of Robinson and Tiernan Avrett of The Woodlands, 14 boy’s doubles.

Also, Levi Milliurn of Lorena, 16 boy’s singles; Morgan Cmerek and Haden Hudson, both of Taylor, 18 girl’s doubles; Cody Randig and Jacob Cmerek, both of Taylor, 18 boy’s doubles; and Wesley Pryor and Amanda Boeker, both of Brenham, 18 mixed doubles.
