Fire in surge protector unit
Rockdale Walmart was evacuated during the noon hour Tuesday due to smoke from a fire in a large industrial surge protector. The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department responded within minutes, dragged the unit into the parking lot and extinguished the blaze. Full Story

Man dies in paraglider crash
DPS copter unit spots wreck near Cameron
Milam County logged a rare aviation fatality Sunday when a 50-year-old Georgia man died in a paraglider crash near Cameron.
A Department of Public Safety helicopter crew spotted the wreckage of Don Bayliss’s craft about 3:15 p.m. Monday, on County Road 202, near Texas 36-US 190. Full Story
RISD backing off 5-cent tax rate hike
The Rockdale ISD, and its taxpayers, will benefit from the recent lawsuit settlement between Luminant and the Milam Appraisal District, as the district is revising its 2012-13 tax rate forecast downward.
In June, administrators were predicting a 5-cent increase from the current $1.225 rate, in the neighborhood of $1.275. Full Story
