VFW post conducting school supply drive
VFW Post 6525 and its Ladies Auxiliary are conducting the 2012 Rockdale school supply drive for students who cannot otherwise afford the supplies and donations are needed.
Supplies may be taken to the VFW post home, 978 West US 79, or the Chamber of Commerce office, 1203 West Cameron Avenue.
Milam County Girl Scouts signup Thursday
The Girls Scouts of Milam County will hold a signup event starting at 5:30 p.m.Thursday, Aug. 9, according to Susan Youngblood.Milam County Sevice Unit director.
The event will be held at the Girl Scout House, 412 Murray in Rockdale. Girls grades kindergarten through 12th may sign up.

La Escuelita, St. Joseph Cemetery group to meet
International Hall-La Escuelita and St. Joseph Cemetery non-profit organization will hold a meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, according to spokesperson Dee Lerma. The meeting will be held at the La Escuelita grounds just off US 79 east of Rockdale, just past the KC Hall.
Items set for discussion include member dues, donations for maintenance by family members of those buried at cemetery and volunteers needed for October fund-raiser.

Grief support meetings held twice monthly

Mini scholarships for Milano school alumni
MILANO—The Milano Alumni Scholarship Committee is now offering mini scholarships for the 2012 fall semester, according to spokesperson Carolyn Hafley.
All MHS graduates who have completed two semesters or more of college or trade school and will be enrolling for classes this fall are eligible to apply.

RTA group awards certification scholarship
Milam County Retired Teachers
Association has awarded Chad Lagrone, Milano teacher and coach, a certification scholarship to cover the costs of tests that he took to expand his certification in teaching. The RTA wants to show their gratitude for Chad’s dedication to teaching and his interest in updating his qualifications by helping with the fees charged for each test, first vice-president Carolyn Hafley said. Lagrone is an 1988 graduate of Milano High School and 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University.
Sunshine quilters to meet August 23
Sunshine ‘n Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 in fellowship hall of Meadowbrook Baptist Church.

Square dance club meets on Thursdays
THORNDALE— Kountr y Squares square dance club will have implemented “fun badges” on the third Thursday of the month. Fun badges are dangles that are earned by dancing in a special way. July 19 was “Dance while Eating a Lemon” night. Aug. 16 will be “Aggravate the Caller” night.

Town & Country Club hears archery demo
THORNDALE—Town & Country Club of Thorndale met at the Downtown Café July 26 for their regular meeting with nine members present and three guests: Tanner Smith, grandson of Sarah Lincoln, and Danielle and Jacob Pedroza, grandchildren of Darleen Tucker. Members played bingo with prizes of fruit preserves for winners.
Cards were sent to members Lenora Jackson for her birthday, Nina Montebaro who is on the sick list and Lanette Tucker who has not been feeling well. A thank you card was received from the MARC Center in Rockdale for the club support of their July party.
Family Night is set for Thursday, Aug. 23 at the Thorndale Area Chamber of Commerce building.
Betty Atkins gave the demonstration for Nina Montebaro who is ill. She demonstrated a blanket she had crocheted an edging. She has completed several for family members. She then showed a windmill wall hanging and hand-embroidered pillowcases by Nina Montebaro.
Danielle and Jacob Pedroza gave a demonstration on their 4-H Shooting Sports equipment and explained the types of bows and arrows used. They also spoke on their recent state capitol tour and the 4-H Water Camp held at Apache Pass.
The meeting was ended with refreshments by Nina Montebaro, Betty Atkins and Peggy Weise. Next meeting will be Aug. 9 at the home of Dorothy Palm.— Darleen Tucker, secretary
