Volleyball spikes up Tuesday

All three teams have playoff aspirations

While football garners most of the attention this time of the year, volleyball teams are also preparing for their upcoming seasons which begin in earnest on Tuesday.

Fourth-year coach Jason Williams leads Rockdale against neighbor Milano on the road Tuesday evening in the season opener for both schools.

The Lady Tigers (8-23 in 2011) scrimmage at Luling on Friday and host Thorndale on Saturday in another scrimmage.

Rockdale returns four seniors and four juniors to the fold.

Nineteen-year veteran Wendy King’s Milano squad will scrimmage at Franklin on Aug. 10 and will open up the season at home against Rockdale on Aug. 14.

Milano (27- 9 in 2011) has made the playoffs in 12 straight years and were upset in the area round by Utopia last seasson.

Lisa Coehlo’s Thorndale unit will scrimmage at Del Valle on Friday and in Rockdale on Saturday before opening up their 2012 campaign at Austin Hyde Park Aug. 14.

The Lady Dogs were 22-16 last season, missing out on the playoffs.
