Lady Tigers get defensive about 2012 season

Six veterans give spikers a gritty presence this year

Every team has one area that a coach would like to see improvement in.

For Jason Williams, it’s doing a better job of stopping people from scoring.

“We are working extra hard on having a smarter, more aggressive defense this year,” said Rockdale’s head coach.

Beginning his fourth year as head coach, Williams has been impressed with the overall attitude of change that his team has possessed so far.

“The girls are working hard and showing they want to make a difference this year in the Lady Tiger volleyball program,” he said. “ We worked out a few kinks in our two scrimmages and we are ready to start our season.

“ The returning players are looking better than last year and the newcomers are rounding out the rest of the line up nicely.”

Speaking of returning, Williams himself is somewhat of an anomoly, starting his fourth year as head coach.

The Lady Tigers, who at one point had six head coaches in eight years (2002-2009), haven’t had a coach with a four-year tenure since Melissa Counihan in 1999-2002 who had their last winning season.

The Lady Tigers lost seasoned veterans Victoria Drake and Jill Young, but return three seniors in middle blocker Lisa Vest, designated setter Marissa Mireles and Libero Morgan Fischer.

Also back is three juniors who saw plenty of court time in 2011 as sophomores in outside hitter Morgan Laughlin, 6-foot middle blocker Shelby Evans and setting specialist Amanda Boyd.

A talented group of newcomers have already made their presence felt, including 5-foot-10 middle blocker Samantha Muston, Kelsey Ford, Emily McCoy and Haley Wright.
