Alcoa selling land to LCRA
Water and power contracts are keys to pending deal
It might be the end of an era.
If there was actually any of the Alcoa Era in Rockdale left to end.
Alcoa announced last Wednesday it had reached an agreement to sell 34,000 acres of land at its Rockdale Operations site to the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA).
Alcoa’s smelter, of course, has been shut down for almost four years. Full Story

RISD expecting 1,574 for starters

School starts Monday for the 2012-13 term in Rockdale and throughout Texas and it ought to look almost the same as the first day in 2011, if estimates are true.
In the Rockdale ISD, an enrollment of 1,574 is forecast, almost identical to the 1,571 who answered the first bell last year. Full Story

Lady Tigers drop marathon match in Thrall
THRALL—Moving ever closer to becoming a good volleyball team, the Rock rehab dale Lady Tigers tested their stamina in a marathon match loss to Thrall Tuesday night, 24-26, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 6-15.
The loss drops the Lady Tigers to 1-7 on the young season. Thrall improved to 4-3. Full Story
Milam jobless numbers remain steady at 9.0%
Texas unemployment rate rises for second straight month
AUSTIN—Milam County’s jobless rate remained steady at 9.0 percent according to numbers released by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) last week. It was the second month in a row the number had been 9.0, as it jumped there from May to June. Full Story

‘Tradin’ on the Trail’ set for Oct. 27-28
El Camino Real Trade Days will come to Milam County on Oct. 27-28 with its route will follow the present El Camino Real National Historic Trail in the county, which currently has 31 miles of venue for treasure hunters to navigate. The Trail has gateways in Cameron, Rockdale and Thorndale and Apache Pass is at the center of the route. Full Story
