Blood drive honoring Dustin Pickel set Sunday

St. John’s United Methodist Church will host a Rockdale community blood drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26 in honor of 2-year-old cancer patient Dustin Pickel.

Dustin, son of Jeff and Kelly Pickel of Round Rock, is undergoing chemotherapy at Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin. His maternal grandparents are John and Sharon Shoemake of Rockdale.

The Blood Center of Central Texas will conduct the blood drive. To sign up to donate, call Eva Strong, 936-828-7306.

City-wide garage sales set Saturday, Sept. 8th

It’s that time again to empty your trunks and put gas in the car. It is city-wide garage sale time.

Rockdale and Thorndale will host a joint annual City Wide Garage Sale on Saturday, Sept. 8.

Over 75 sales are expected to be held between the two towns.

The sales will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Deadline is Friday, Aug. 31 for both Rockdale and Thorndale sales to be listed in three places in The Rockdale Reporter.

Crisis counseling center plans two-day workshop

The American Academy of Crisis Counseling will hold a two-day workshop “The Crisis of Finances” Aug. 24-25 at 103 Mulberry.

Professional presenters, grant writers and business people will be on hand to assist teams from churches and businesses.

Topics will include family finances, Bible principals for building financial success, faithbased grant writing and many more.

Milam Democrats set pair of ‘block parties’

The Milam County Democratic Party will host a pair block parties on Labor Day in Rockdale and Cameron, according to Richard Stone, county chair.

Block parties will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Cameron at 602 East Seventh, and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the pavilion in Veterans Park in Rockdale.

Volunteers will serve cold lemonade and homemade cookies at both events.

“These are informal, comeand go affairs,” Stone said. Local Democratic candidates on the general election ballot are expected to attend.

Dana Andrews author to appear here Sept. 16

Dr. Carl Rollyson, author of Hollywood Enigma: Dana Andrews, a biography of a major motion picture star who once lived in Rockdale, will be at the Patterson Center Sunday, Sept. 16, an event sponsored by Friends of the Library.

In addition to a reception for Dr. Rollyson, the 3 to 5 p.m. event will feature a theatrical reading of a short play Promises to Keep, about Rockdale native George Sessions Perry, performed by a local theatre group.

The play was written by Dr. Robert Cowser of the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Dr. Rollyson’s book will be on sale. He teaches journalism and writing professions at Baruch College, City University of New York.

Andrews lived in Rockdale as a child, from 1916 to 1918, while his father was pastor of First Baptist Church.

Troopers probe two South Milam crashes

Two non-injury highway crashes were investigated by the Department of Public Safety in South Milam County during the past week:

Trooper Ernest DelBosque said vehicles operated by Cecilia Lopez, 37, of Hearne and David Fults Jr., 26, of Rockdale were in collision at 4:07 p.m. Thursday in the construction area of FM 1812 north of Rockdale, near CR 303A.

Damages were termed minor to moderate.

Extensive damages were reported in a one-vehicle accident at 3:35 a.m. Sept. 14, on US 77 north of Minerva.

Driver was listed as Devin Hemphill, 21, of Cameron.

Volunteer firefighters busy during past week

Volunteer firefighters in the Rockdale area had a busy past seven days with the following calls dispatched:

• 12:18 p.m. Thursday, car on fire in front of Rockdale Federal Credit Union, Rockdale VFD.

• 6:03 p.m. Friday, grass fire in Davilla, call canceled, Thorndale VFD.

• 8:21 p.m. Friday, fire alarm, Dyer, Street, canceled, false alarm, Rockdale VFD.

• 1:31 p.m. Saturday, transformer sparking, Salty Street, Thorndale, Thorndale VFD.

• 4:54 p.m. Saturday, trailer on fire, CR 357, Milano and Gause VFDs; Gause VFD responded to rekindle at 9:01 p.m.

• 12:53 p.m. Monday, grass fire, Texas 36 south of Milano, Milano VFD.

• From 9:08 to 10:02 p.m. Saturday, Thorndale and Rockdale VFDs responded to limbs down at two Thorndale locations and Hogan Street in Rockdale.
