Milam 4-H record books place at state

Four Milam County 4-Hers competed in the State 4-H record books in August. A total of 302 4-Hers from across the state submitted record books for the judging. Congratulations to the 4-Hers for their accomplishments.

William Dean placed second on his Shooting Sports record book. He is a member of the Milam County 4-H Shooting Sports Club and the Rockdale 4-H Club.

Ethan Krumnow placed third on his Energy Management record book. He is a member of the Milam County 4-H Shooting Sports Club and the Rockdale 4-H Club.

Collin Kostroun placed fourth on his Range Management record book. He is a member of the Cameron 4-H Club.

Hailee Fisher placed 10th on her Leadership record book. She is a member of the Thorndale 4-H Club.

CALF SCRAMBLES—Milam 4-H’ers must sign up to be considered for major livestock show calf scrambles.

Signups start in August for the Heart O’ Texas show and in early September for the San Antonio, Fort Worth, and Houston livestock shows.

A calf scramble is an event where about 30 youth try to catch about 14 calves in a rodeo Arena during the livestock shows.

Those lucky enough to catch a calf, and then get it back to the starting line will receive a voucher to purchase an animal.

The 4-H’er will then purchase an animal according to the show guidelines. After raising the animal and keeping records on the project, the 4-H’er will return to show the animal next year.

If you are interested in signing up for the major livestock scrambles, contact the extension office as soon as possible at 254-697-7045 or come by 100 East First in Cameron.

The 4-H’er and parent need to set-up a parent and exhibitor meeting to go over guidelines and requirements.

CALENDAR ART—4-H’ers need to show off their talents and submit drawings for the 2012-2013 County 4-H Calendar.

You can submit drawings illustrating your 4-H projects and the slogan “Milam County 4-H for America’s Future”.

You can submit multiple drawings for the contest.

Drawings should be submitted to the Milam County Extension Office by Sept. 14. You can submit your drawings on plain white paper (8 1/2 by 11).

Pencil or color pictures will be accepted, but remember that most pictures are printed in black and white for the calendar, so make sure your picture will copy.

The calendar handout will be published and distributed on Oct. 7 at our celebration.

First, second and third place drawings will receive money prizes at the celebration. You can submit multiple drawings, so get busy.

FUND-RAISER—Each year, Milam County 4-H holds a Drawing at the annual 4-H Celebration. Prizes are donated by 4-H Clubs and others, so the money raisers will assist 4-H’ers and leaders as they participate in county, district and state activities.

Money raised also provides funding for the county contests and workshops that help train 4-H’ers and leaders. 4-H families can get donation tickets from their club managers or from the extension office at 100 E. 1st Street in Cameron.

We are asking all 4-H’ers to sell tickets to assist the county program.

The club selling the most tickets will have their representatives named Mr. and Miss 4-H and the second place club will have their representatives named prince and princess.

The drawing will be Oct. 7 during the 4-H Celebration Event in Cameron. We need all 4-H families to sell as many as possible to continue providing support to 4-H. Donation tickets are also available for purchase at the extension office.
