Fishing, fun day set September 8

On Saturday, Sept. 8 Milam County 4-Hers and parents are invited to a Fishing and Fun Day on the Lagrone Place near Milano. The event will start at 9 a.m. and end about 2:30 p.m. If you call the Extension Office, we will send you a map to the fishing hole.

Information on fish, tackle, safety, and much more will be provided by Shane Pavlicek, Fishery’s Department of the Texas Parks and Wildlife in Kerrville and Charles Mayer, Milam County Game Warden.

The Milam County Wildlife Challenge team will also show you a new 4-H contest about Wildlife. There will be a lot of information to improve your knowledge.

Bring your fishing equipment so you can fish. Also, bring a chair and your own lunch, snacks and soda drinks. We will have fun learning the tricks of fishing and seeing what we can catch. If you have questions or need a map, contact the Milam County Extension Office, 254-697-7045 or email ce-walker@tamu.edu.

CALF SCRAMBLES—4- Hers need to come sign-up to be considered for major livestock show calf scrambles. The signups will start in August for the Heart O’ Texas show and in early September for the San Antonio, Fort Worth and Houston livestock shows.

A calf scramble is where about 30 youth try to catch about 14 calves in the Rodeo Arena during the livestock shows. The youth that are lucky enough to catch a calf and then get it back to the starting line will receive a voucher to purchase an animal. The 4-Her will then purchase an animal according to the show guidelines. After raising the animal and keeping records on the project, the 4-Her will return to show the animal next year.

If you are interested in signing up for the major livestock scrambles, contact the Milam County Extension Office as soon as possible. The 4-Her and parent need to set-up a parent & exhibitor meeting to go over guidelines and requirements. If you are interested in participating in the calf scrambles, contact the Extension Office now to set-up a meeting time prior to the sign-up deadlines.

CALENDAR DRAWINGS— 4-Hers need to show off their talents and submit drawings for the 2012 2013 Milam County 4-H Calendar. You can submit drawings illustrating your 4-H projects and the slogan “Milam County 4-H for America’s Future”. You can submit multiple drawings for the contest.

Submit drawings to the Milam County Extension Office by Sept. 14. You can submit your drawings on plain white paper (8 1/2 x 11). Pencil or colored pictures will be accepted, but remember that most pictures are printed in black and white for the calendar, so make sure your picture will copy.

The calendar handout will be published and distributed on Oct. 7 at our Celebration. The first, second and third place drawings will receive money prizes at the Celebration. You can submit multiple drawings, so get busy and start drawing.

RAFFLE TICKETS—Each year, Milam County 4-H holds a raffle drawing at the annual 4-H Celebration. The prizes are all donated by 4-H Clubs and others, so the money raised will assist 4-Hers and leaders as they participate in county, district and state activities. It provides funding for the county contests and workshops that help train 4-Hers and leaders.

4-H families can get tickets from their club managers or from the Milam County Extension Office in Cameron. We are asking all 4-Hers to sell tickets to assist the county program. The club selling the most tickets will have their representatives named Mr. & Miss 4-H and the second place club will have their representatives named Prince & Princess.

The drawing will be on Oct. 7 during the 4-H Celebration Event in Cameron. We need all 4-H families to sell as many as possible to continue providing support to 4-H. Tickets are also available for purchase at the Milam County Extension Office.
