Still royalty


Reporter/Mike Brown Reporter/Mike Brown It may not be “King Cotton” any more in Milam County but the familiar white bolls and green waist-high plants are still familiar sights in late summer. This field is in the Blackland Prairie just north of Thorndale, still prime cotton-growing country, as it has been for more than a century. Texas still leads the nation in cotton production with over 6 million acres planted in recent years, one-fourth the entire United States cotton crop. There are about 9,000 square miles of cotton fields in Texas, roughly the size of the state of New Hampshire.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
