Technically, the long-awaited restoration of the Worley Bridge over the San Gabriel River (County Road 428) is under way. Jamie Griffin, project designer with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), was on the bridge Friday, taking measurements, while a TxDOT-contracted environmental impact crew worked in the river below. West Nile case found in Milam
First one in five years; mosquito control urged
Milam County has recorded a case of the sometimes deadly West Nile Virus, the first confirmed case in the county since 2007.
Michelle Ferguson, Public Health Preparedness Coordinator for the Milam County Health Department, said positive cases are reported automatically to the department by healthcare providers. Full Story

Capital murder trial delayed
Cotton jury selection moved to Jan. 7th
A conf lict by a Georgetown defense attorney has pushed the capital murder trial of a 19-yearold Rockdale man from October to January.
Brandon Charles Cotton was to have gone on trial Oct. 9 in 20th District Court, Cameron, as one of two defendants in the April 25, 2011, shotgun slaying of 50-yearold Sandra “Sandy” Phillips of San Gabriel. Full Story

Enrollment down in RISD for first day
Gause up by 11 percent
First-day enrollment in the Rockdale ISD was down 28 students on the first day of the 2012- 13 school year Monday, when compared to last year.
Dr. Howell Wright, superintendent, said 1,543 students were enrolled at the district’s four campuses Monday. That compares to 1,571 on the first day of 2011-12. Full Story
