A $100,000 renovation project is under way at the site of a former discount store to accommodate Aaron’s Furniture, which will become Rockdale’s newest retail business. Aaron’s, a large lease-to-own chain, is renovating the former Dollar General on the corner of Cameron (US 79) and Meadow. Contractor for renovation of the 7,400-square-foot building is Caffey Construction. Full Story
County appoints judges for general election
CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners, meeting Monday in regular session, have appointed judges, and alternates, for the Nov. 6 general election.
There will be 11 voting boxes in the county. Judges and alternates were appointed as follows:
• Precinct 101 (Cameron), Kyle Deal, Tom Jones.
• Precinct 105 (Buckholts), Kelli Dudley, Doug Kleypas. Full Story

Six draw terms in 20th District Court
CAMERON—Six persons were sentenced last week in 20th District Court, according to Prosecutor Kerry Spears, who listed them as follows:
• Amber Grace Ellis, 20, Troy, pleaded guilty to debit card abuse, two years deferred adjudication probation, community supervision, $1,500 restitution, with co-defendant. Full Story
RVFD assists at Thorndale fire
Rockdale volunteer firefighters assisted the Thorndale VFD early Monday morning as fire gutted a century old-residence in that city.
The Thorndale VFD was dispatched at 4:03 a.m. to a structure fire at the corner of West Gibson and Fourth in that city.
Rockdale firefighters were summoned for mutual aid at 5:12 a.m. Full Story
One South Milam crash for troopers
One motor vehicle accident was reported to the Department of Public Safety in the Rockdale area during the past week.
Trooper Broderick Sims said the accident was reported at 4 p.m. Sunday on US 79 in Milano.
Drivers were listed as Jennifer Grimes, 39, of Rockdale and Cassondra Smith, 23, of Milano. Full Story
Options for auto dealer include move from town
MDD tables grant, tax abatement to assist business
Mi l ler - Starne s Chev rolet Buick, a family-owned Rockdale dealership for almost a half-century, is eyeing options that include a possible move to a different city.
The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) on Tuesday discussed, but tabled, a possible $10,000 grant plus tax abatements to help the dealership renovate its 60-year-old facilities and remain in town. Full Story
$5,000 FOR UNITED WAY—
South Milam County United Way picked up a $5,156.98 donation from Luminant Friday. Funds will be used for a dental and medical student fund in the Rockdale, Thorndale and Milano ISDs. Full Story
Council to adopt tax rate, budget in Thursday votes
Rockdale City Council members plan to set the city’s new tax rate and adopt the 2012-13 budget on Thursday.
Since the budget and tax rate each require two readings and two votes, the council will meet twice, at 5:30 p.m and again at 6 at City Hall. Full Story

Texas Department of Transportation crews continued road work this week in Milam County, including texture pavement on US 79 at the west Texas 36 intersection in Milano. Traffic was delayed on both the eastbound and westbound lanes of US 79 and the southbound lane of TX 36. Also, a widening project will reduce traffic to one lane of FM 1712 from US 77 to FM 487.
