‘Americans’ Creed’ should be memorized by all
Ted Hubert

A re you familiar with the American Creed? William Tyler Page wrote the creed in 1917 as a contest entry and the United States adopted the American Creed in 1918.

In my view, it should be memorized by all of us. School children could recite it upon opening the school day just after the pledge of allegiance to the American flag and the Texas state flag.

Here it is:

“I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people and for the people whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; A democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states.

“A perfect union, one and inseparable established upon those principals of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.

“I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its constitution; to obey its laws, and to defend it against all enemies.”

The strong message, for Milam County to send this October, is for all Americans to obey the law. This should be taught in the home, church, schools, etc as mentioned above.

This simple act would lower prices in stores for everyone. The cost of shoplifting is difficult for business to determine because the difference between a stores inventory and its actual inventory, called shrinkage, is caused by administrative or bookkeeping errors, employee theft, vendor or deliveryman theft, or shoplifting.

Mistakes that are unintentional are labeled as honest mistakes and we realize that to be human is to err, but for someone to deliberately steal or rob hurts the criminals and the victims.

Another strong message to be taught is the value of an individuals self worth. A thief chips away at their conscience every time they commit a crime until they become insensitive to the harm they do.

It effects their personality in a negative way that results in the loss of self worth. Are thieves happy people? It is doubtful. It takes education for individuals to realize that the more honest you are and the more lawful you become, the more money you save.

Speeders on our highways should stop bad mouthing the law enforcers for writing them tickets. The police officer did not have control of the vehicle.

The excessive speed forces the law officer to react to unlawful behavior. How much money would lawfulness save these law breakers?

The City of Cameron Police Department will kick off the Crime Prevention Month with a program at 7 p.m. Oct. 2.

The City of Cameron courtroom is located at 306 W. Houston and Chief Randy Dixon’s program is on “Home Crime Prevention.”
